TeaWood 茶木 @teawood.hk is one of my favorite casual dining restaurant in Hong Kong. It serves Taiwanese dishes. I took B here on the first day he arrived in Hong Kong (again).

It’s always a challenge to come up with places that would seem “local” enough, with food that I like, and is comfortable. But TeaWood certainly checks all these boxes. I don’t usually come to the restaurant, but I order delivery from them a lot.

They are one of the best takeout restaurants nearby. Besides serving everything in recycled paper containers, the noodle soup always comes in separate containers for noodles vs soup. When I lived in New York, I had to remind (demand) restaurants separate the noodles to prevent them from being overcooked when they arrive.

1/ Stewed Beef Noodles 紅燒牛肉麵

One of my favorite beef noodle soup in Hong Kong! Although I also like the beef noodle soup from Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐, I slightly prefer the version at TeaWood.

They always come with generous portion of Cilantro that adds the necessary herbal accents to an otherwise filling dish. Comes with carrot and daikon, which makes the dish feels less heavy. Very yummy stock as well.

2/ Sweet Soft Boiled Egg 甜蜜溏心蛋

I often go to Shanghainese restaurants just for the smoked eggs, but these soft boiled eggs are a closed second. These are very similar to the ones that are served in Japanese ramen restaurants, but with a hint a sweet notes.

3/ Sausages Grilled in Taiwanese Style 古早烤香腸

Most people would be familiar with 臘腸 Lap cheong, but unlike the smoked and dried sausages, 香腸 Xiang chang is a fresh and plump sausage that’s rather sweet. These are gently grilled to give a contrast in texture on the skin.

4/ Fried Chicken Pieces in Taiwanese Style 台灣鹽酥雞

Taiwanese fried chicken has an interesting coating that’s similar to the ones used for salt and pepper squid. I like these bite sized versions better than the larger steaks — which are popular in Taiwanese street food.

5/ Yuzu Iced Drink 柚子冰

Lemon Iced Water is a popular drink in Hong Kong. Instead of lemon, yuzu is used.

6/ SML + B

I can’t show his face. I’m secretly hoping that I can do it after ten years. (ha)
